About the Annual Columbia Heights Day Festival
Columbia Heights Day Initiative is a local, independent grassroots 501(c )(3) nonprofit organization that presents the Columbia Heights Day Festival every August. Our mission is to host community events through volunteer efforts and corporate donations, which highlight Columbia Heights businesses, provide information from community organizations and promote Columbia Heights values, character and history of neighborhood relationships that are principled on diversity, service and community.
Five years ago, we decided to "put-up or shut-up" after discussing how wonderful a community celebration, similar to the Adams Morgan Day Festival, would be for Columbia Heights. Seeing no other alternative, we rounded up a few friends who liked the idea and pitched the concept to a few local businesses, Councilmember Jim Graham and local civic associations. Everyone we approached enthusiastically endorsed the idea, and before we knew it we were a registered nonprofit, opened a bank account, organized a fundraiser and planned a festival.
From one day on a dusty ball field to year-round programming, Columbia Heights Day continues to grow along with the neighborhood.
